The office

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Over the past week or two I have been getting some work done on the projects mentioned in my previous post.

I think that the drive behind this productivity is that I have been working from Costa in Newbury, my new office.

With the option of two views, one looking out over the main shopping street and the other offering a panoramic over the canal. Both allow perfect opportunity to just sit back people-watch.

The constant flow of people on and out creates the perfect kind of environment for me to work on. The only draw back is the lack of wireless access, something which doesn’t seem to be available in the tiny Starbucks across the road.

It’s easy to appear pretentious when sitting there working away on my MacBook, perhaps even more so when I’m wearing a smart shirt and tie.

Nevertheless it works for me and I hope it continues to do so.

More design work!

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I have a couple of design projects on the go at the moment, which is nice because it means that I am not totally bored during this annoying unemployed state!

Despite having had a number of interviews last week, and a few more in the pipeline, I am fed up with not being employed. Although I am realising that it hasn’t actually been all that long that I have been looking for a job, but it is now getting to the point where a regular income and something that I can put my effort into would be a very welcomed situation.

This is one of the projects that I have been working on. It is to be a re-working of the Barbarossa website that I originally created about a year ago. The colour scheme has been altered to reflect the new decor in both the restaurant and the newly opened wine bar.

There are some elements that I have been considering during the design process that have come about from digging into the CSS used in WordPress themes – such as creating more detailed navigation styling to reflect the current page as well as the regular link states.

The other site that I ahve been designing is for the BRUJEN Alpaca Stud farm (Alpacas are apparantly Llamas that have wool instead of hair, oh and they don’t spit either).

There will hopefully be a few others in the pipeline shortly, once I confirm more details with my various contacts.

In deciding to begin offering my services on a freelance basis, I realise that I need to rework my own portfolio site so that it is reflective of my services rather than being just a personal portfolio site.

I have been looking at the website of a number of smaller web designers & agencies that serve the kind of clients that I will be seeking. Most of these are seen as a portfolio of services & projects in a similar way that a catalogue is used to inform customers of a companies products.

Along with this will also come the joyous task of creating an actual company, so I am sure I will have lots of Tax, National Insurance and various other issues to read up on – YAY!

A long way for a coffee

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

Today saw me heading to Sudbury by train to collect my little sister, Sara, and bring her back to Thatcham.

It did give me the chance to have a coffee from Costa, Nero and Starbucks :)

Leaving at half 6 meant I was in Sudbury by 10ish. It doesn’t sound like long but it did involve standing on platforms at Thatcham, Paddington, Liverpool Street, Marks Tey and Sudbury.

It turned out to be a gorgeous day by the time I was on Sudbury and it was nice to see the shift on scenery between London and Sudbury – with towerblocks and skyscrapers being replaced with rolling fields and rows of green trees.

I was rather surprised to find out that Sara’s one way ticket cost more then my return! Madness!

In searching through the Apple apps store I found a number of iPhone equivelants for things that o do on my computers, a wordpress interface being one of them.

This is my first attempt at using it and it is proving to be useful in getting to grips with the iPhone keyboard.

IT’S HERE!

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

WOOP WOOP!

I have been up since about 6am, eager to get to the sorting office to collect my iPhone, and now I have it!

My gorgeous new toy is currently syncing with iTunes, uploading a whole bunch of video podcasts for me to entertain myself with during the 8 hours or so that I will be spending on trains when I head to Sudbury and back again tomorrow.

Only issue so far is that my podcast library stands at about 22Gb, a little too much for the 16Gb capacity of the iPhone but hey, I’ll live with it!

My next step is to add a few applications and games to both entertain me and add to my productivity – well that’s the plan anyway! I really want to try and get as much use out of this phone as is possible, one aspect of this has been to sync it with only 1 email address (the one which shall become my main address for freelance work) to prevent being bombarded with junk emails.

iPhone 3G – coming soon!

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Whilst buying some cigarettes in a newsagent in Sudbury, I noticed a tall guy wearing a T-shirt that mentioned the new iPhone 3G. It seems that it was released that very morning, a fact that I was not aware of – leading me to believe that I am not as much of an Apple Fanboy as Dave may think!

I wandered into Carphone Warehouse (CW) and despite initial interesting in a non Apple phone, I was soon drawn in to the latest Apple gadget.

Needless to say I ordered the 16Gb model, doing so in the understanding that it would be instore for me to collect the following Monday. It was Tuesday before I was able to get back into the store only to find that CW had over sold the stock that they had, with myself being one of the customers left to wait.

The salesmans lanyard inforamtion cards were the only iPhone related bits that I managed to obtain despite handing over £160.

On arriving back from an interview this morning I was delighted to see a Royal Mail delivery card stating that my package had arrived, but would need to be collected from the sorting office tomorrow as a signature is required.

IT’S ALMOST HERE NOW!

A week in the country – part 2, Business cards and guns that fire shots!

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

I finally got the chance to apply my skillset to life in the countryside during my stay in Suffolk.

Nigel’s owner, Lucinda, and her neighbour Jenny have a company that raises pigs for meat. The day after I arrived they were undertaking a hog roast for a meeting of the local chamber of commerce.

Given the higher profile nature of their clients, they had decided to get some business cards designed and made for distribution at the event. This is where I came in!

I created a number of layouts based on their specifications, adding in a few alternatives with different colour options. Given the timing, the chosen design was simply printed out on a photo-quality printer on some very nice card and then hand trimmed with a guillotine.

I must say that I was also impressed with how well they came out, it was really satisfying to see a physical stack of work that I had created – especially as most of my work is purely digital.

I’ve yet to take some nice images of the cards in order to add them to my portfolio, but I will wait until I have completed the other printed items that I’m working on for them (letterhead, price lists etc).

After spending a little too much time in the local pub that evening, I cycled back up to Jenny’s the following afternoon to create another run of cards and also to get copies of the existing documents that were to be re-styled.

Shortly after sorting this, Jenny’s husband Bruce turned up along with George, Lucinda’s son. With them came the revealing of Bruce’s shotgun, a box of clay pigeons and a few boxes of cartridges. My eyes lit up!

After setting up the trap from which to launch the clays, I observed Bruce taking a few shots and obliterating the clays. He then handed me his shotgun.

Shooting is something that has always interested me but has always been something that I had never been able to pursue. A few shots later, managing to hit a number of clays, I was certain that this would not be the first and last time that I fired a shotgun.

Every aspect of it was fantastic! Feeling the weight of the gun in my hands as  I tracked the clays’ flight, the impact of firing the shot, seeing the clay explode and then the smell of the spent cartridge, all added up to leave me absolutely certain that this was indeed something that I will continue to do in the future.

Livi had told me that she would get me a shotgun for my 25th, an offer which put a rather large smile on my face!

I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people for me to get to know thorugh Livi! As well as Bruce, Jenny, Lucinda and Nick I also got the chance to have a conversation with Pete a local gamekeeper. I had followed the New Years day hunt with Pete and had discussed the prospects of me getting into shooting at that time, but this was obviously something that couldn’t be followed up due to my commitments with university.

The offer still seems to be there for me to go and help out on a few shoots with him, allowing me to get into that scene from the ground level. It was good to have Pete’s enthusiasm regarding me shooting – seeing it as the much needed young blood to get involved with the sport in order to continue it through the years.

I plan on treating myself to a shooting lesson at the time when I start to have regular money coming in once again. Although I may use some of the money generated from making websites to pursue this endeavour :)

A week in the country – part 1 More horses

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

With my university life now over, I finally had the chance to go back to Suffolk and see Livi once again!

Needless to say, this visit meant that I spent a lot of time helping Livi with the various horses that she now tends to. Nigel was the same as ever, acting like a big dog as he was led from stable to field and vice versa.

He even followed me around the school with Livi just letting him go where he pleased. It was quite sweet really, as I walked around the outside of the school and then across the middle to change the rein he casually walked just a few paces behind me.

The latest horse that Livi has ‘taken on’ is Titch, his name being one that is rather sarcastic as Titch he most definitely is not! I can’t remember how tall he stands but he is not only tall, but wide too!

It seems that he was mistreated in the past leaving him to be somewhat nervous, especially when being led into his field. But of course, me being me, I wasn’t phased by the big lad and helped Livi to muck him out and gather up his rather large hay net!

After a few days of getting to know him I helped Livi take him out to his field, a task that was somewhat difficult as he had to be led 2 other fields with sliding posts before we could get him to his allocated field.

Livi had opted to put the head collar on the mare in the middle field, hoping to tempt Titch in quietly – it seemed to work! As Livi had hold of the mare, I wandered back over to Titch, who calmly allowed me to get his lead rope back on (albeit looped through, rather than clipped to the head collar – allowing for quick release should he deicde to canter away) and guided him up to the middle field. To my surprise, and Livi’s joy, he seemed to allow me to keep hold of him and lead him to the final field – at which point he casually walked in rather than trotting.

He really does seem to be a gentle giant at heart, it is only his past that leads him to get a little agitated at times.

Livi and I couldn’t help but think that he is very much like Nigel used to be, although for different reasons. It would be great for him to be in a similar frame of mind in a years time, allowing him to show his abilities.

It seems that he is already a brilliant show jumper, a talent that allowed him to jump from one field into another during one of his more agitated moments!

Last.fm Beta testing

Friday, July 4th, 2008

I have been using last.fm since December 12th, 2006 – scrobbling around 44,000 tracks in this time.

Yesterday morning I recieved an email invite to try out http://beta.last.fm, their development site for the next version of last.fm. This testing has so far only been open to subscribers to last.fm so I was pretty chuffed to get the invite.

I had a quick look through each of the different pages, which in my mind have a much better organisational structure in place – making it much easier to navigate through the new, uncluttered, pages. I left a few comments about a few design issues that I noticed (i.e. adverts not aligning with content).

In browsing through the new ‘Library’ feature I noticed that when viewed in alphabetical order, a number of letters/characters did not behave as the rest of them did. I also noted that the band Portishead was categorised under the letter ‘B’ rather than ‘P’.

After finding this for one letter, I decided I should really go through each letter in turn to see which ones were also affected. Once again I reported the bug and I am keen to see it being addressed and amended in future versions.

I took a few screen grabs to allow comparison of both layouts.

This is how my profile page currently looks:

This is the current Beta version of the same page:

Now it really begins!

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I’ve finally finished my degree now, I got a 2:1 since you asked :)

Whilst this site has been neglected over the past year, I feel that now I will have the time to spend adding more ramblings here.

I am currently developing http://abreakfromlife.com (abfl), my portfolio site. A project that has re-awakened my passion for playing with code! At the moment I’m re-working the blog layout on abfl, working with WordPress and a number of writings from Elliot Jay Stocks (someone with talent that I am rapidly becoming very jealous of!).

The process of writing the CSS style sheet as well as a few bits of PHP is a brilliant experience once everything falls into place, and one is left in that moment of clarity!

Anyway, upon completing the abfl blog I hope to utilise WordPress as a CMS for the whole site – as long as I can work out how to use parent/child pages.
